Hocking College Energy Institute

FACILITY
The Hocking College Energy Institute opened in September 2009. Hocking College was awarded a $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration for the construction of an innovative learning facility near the Logan-Hocking Commerce Park in Hocking County. The Energy Institute features green building design aspects and hands-on learning labs for students studying in the college’s advanced energy, fuel cells, and vehicular hybrids training programs.

The Hocking College Energy Institute project is pursuing LEED Platinum certification through the US Green Building Council (USGBC).  This is the highest level of certification allowed by USGBC and is a testament to Hocking’s commitment to green collar education.

PROGRAMS
Hocking College Energy Institute offers two Associate Degree programs: Advanced Energy & Fuel Cells and Automotive Hybrids.  Graduates of these programs are employed in various areas of the energy field including hydrogen storage, advanced battery development, solid oxide fuel cell production, proton exchange fuel cell membrane, corrosion, cryogenics, fleet technicians, automotive service technicians, sales and marketing of vehicular diagnostic equipment, and vehicular laboratory technicians.

At the Hocking College Energy Institute students receive hands-on learning that enables them to practice safety procedures, fuel compression and cryogenics of hydrogen, natural gas, and liquid propane gas. Students also learn about the construction, installation, modification and testing of multiple types of advanced energy apparatus. This extensive curriculum allows students to be ready to enter into the exciting and evolving energy industry.

The college also offers a 40-hour, hands-on training course on Solar Photovoltaics design and installation that prepares individuals to sit for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Entry Level Certification exam.

MISSION
Hocking College is known for developing and matching local assets with regional, national, and global market realities. We are the only two-year college in Appalachian Ohio offering comprehensive training programs that address multiple types of advanced energy, including automotive hybrids, fuel cell technology and interdisciplinary courses in solar energy, wind turbines and hydro electrics.

Located adjacent to the Logan-Hocking Commerce Park in Logan, OH, our LEED certified campus serves as a working experiential laboratory while attracting green technology companies. Our classroom experience extends beyond our walls and into neighboring advanced energy businesses. Daily collaboration and interchange with companies competing in the marketplace allows for direct Institute and industry collaboration and real-time adjustments in our curriculum and training approaches, while providing our students with internships and a competitive advantage when entering the job market.

Consistent with our hands-on learning philosophy, the Institute’s green campus permits demonstrations and experiments on a real-world scale. The presence of functioning advanced energy sources such as solar power, wind, and fuel cells in all of the Institute’s facilities places the future in students’ hands today.

The emerging “green economy” demands a workforce to construct, install, troubleshoot, modify and test multiple types of alternative energy equipment and applications.  The Hocking College Energy Institute is well-positioned to meet the challenge.

  • Clean energy alternatives will account for more than half of the energy produced around the world by 2020, dramatically altering the global economic balance of power.
  • Today's alternative energy startups will be tomorrow's worldwide power brokers, as conventional fuel companies and utilities form alliances to ensure the continuous uninterruptable generation of electricity.
  • The renewable energy industry will be a major creator of jobs over the next ten years; production of photovoltaic cells and inverters in Ohio will more than triple in the next several years.
